Fatal crash shuts down Highway 321 near Blowing Rock

BLOWING ROCK, NC (WBTV) -

One man is dead and highway 321 north of Lenoir has been shut down for hours because of a wreck involving a tractor trailer and two other vehicles.

Troopers say this truck carying 18 tons of yarn flipped on it's side in a curve and slid into the path of this jeep, which sustained extensive damage, then slammed into the side of a truck.

The truck broke apart from the impact and the driver was killed instantly.

Troopers say a passenger in that truck walked away but the driver of the tractor trailer and the Jeep were taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Investigators are still trying to determine why the tractor trailer flipped onto its side.

At this time, officials estimate that the lane is expected to remain closed through late afternoon while authorities investigate the crash.

A flagman is on site routing all southbound traffic to the northbound lane.

Motorists traveling south from the Boone area should take U.S. 421 to N.C. 18 in Wilkesboro to Lenoir back onto U.S. 321.

Vehicles also can take U.S. 421 to Interstate 77 South toward I-40/Charlotte. Northbound traffic on U.S. 321 heading from Hickory toward Boone can reverse these directions.
