Meck. Co. manager to employees: I'm not leaving

Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones

Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones says, despite rumors, he plans on staying as county manager until at least 2015.

Jones sent a letter to all Mecklenburg County employees on Tuesday morning.  The letter is copied in its entirety below.

You may have seen news media reports recently that speculate about my future as Mecklenburg  County Manger.

I want to assure you that my stated intentions have not changed...I plan to remain as county manager…until I retire in the last quarter of calendar year 2015.

I recognize that speculation in the news media can be distracting.

However, I also know you will be able to set aside such distractions as you continue to focus your attention on serving the citizens of Mecklenburg County.

Sources told WBTV on Monday night that Jones will be the subject  of a 'personnel matter' during a closed session of the Board of County Commissioners meeting Tuesday evening.

Commissioners, who asked not to be identified, tell WBTV that Jones was asked to give a presentation detailing what the transition from him as County Manager would be like.

Jones has said in the past he plans to retire in 2015.

WBTV contacted Jones Monday night and he said he had "no comment."

But according to some Mecklenburg County Commissioners, there has been some tension between Jones and some commissioners regarding accountability.

One Commissioner says some on the board would like to see Jones leave before his 2015 retirement. That's why he was asked to come back with a transition plan.

WBTV contacted several commissioners who told us they had no comment because "personnel matters are confidential."

However, some Commissioners tell WBTV that tonight's presentation does not mean Jones is departing early. Commissioners "want to know what they're dealing with." No decision is expected tonight.
