Spring is still a few days away but region already seeing strong storms

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

This is just the beginning of the spring time weather season. Here in the South we know that brings lots of thunder, lightning and rain and even flooding.

Monday night's storm brought heavy rains and lightning.

In fact, the lightning was so frequent, WBTV's Brigida Mack couldn't even do a live shot Monday because it's just too dangerous.

Crews in the field have to extend what's called a mast several feet into the air in order to send a signal to one of our towers.

This week is National Flood Preparedness week and first responders -- particularly firefighters -- wanted us to remind you never to try and drive through flooded streets.

You know the motto: "turn around, don't drown" because even when it looks like it's not that deep, you never know until you're in it and by then -- it's too late.

The Charlotte Fire Department also told WBTV it was monitoring the levels of the city's many creeks including Little Sugar Creek.

CFD did tell us some of the sensors at area creeks did go off which is why they're keeping a close eye on them.
