CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
We routinely see used tablets for sale on popular internet websites such as E-bay and Craigslist, but when it comes to buying an iPad from an individual buyer need to be aware.
Nick Streubel is a service technician at the Goodwill Compu Works store and understands how electronic devices are easily tracked by the manufacturer.
He said, "I pad now a days you can just get them with wifi or you can get them with 3 G which will include a lot of carrier apps like AT&T carry GPS, which allow for a little bit better security."
Not all passengers at Charlotte Douglas International are holding on to their electronic devices, and last month alone their nearly a half dozen thefts inside the terminal.
Thieves tried to cover their tracks by removing an app called Find my iPad.
However, Apple can still find these devices.
All police need to do is provide the company with a search warrant.
That's how some of the stolen devices at Charlotte Douglas Airport were located.
According to WBTV Cyberexpert Theresa Payton, it's best to make sure that any used device you buy comes in its original, has an owner's manual, and if possible receipts as well as all important serial numbers.
Nick Streubel also tells us additional peace of mind can come by picking up theft insurance. "It may cost a few dollars if it's stolen, even if they happen to track it via GPS. There's a slim chance you're gonna get it back," he said.
No arrests have been made related to the cases at the Charlotte airport, and one device was located in Colombia South America.
