Teen accused in 2010 murder gets mistrial

A mistrial was declared in the trial against Tre Cortez Barber, 19, after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on the charge of first-degree murder, according to a release from the District Attorney's Office.

The trial was held March 4 through 12, in Mecklenburg County Superior Court.

Barber was tried for first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon for the 2010 murder of 18-year-old Chaufa Johnson.

Johnson was shot in the stomach and killed while outside at the Forest Ridge Apartments, off Reddman Road in southeast Charlotte.

A witness on the scene said that a man took something out of Johnson's pocket while she was lying on the ground after being shot.

Johnson's brother, Carlon Johnson, says he'd made a trip to the store, and when he came back he found his sister lying in a pool of blood.

"I held her in my arms," he told WBTV in 2010, "I held her in my arms, saying, 'Baby it's going to be okay. It's going to be okay. It's going to be alright.'"

Carlon says an ambulance came, and Johnson was later pronounced dead at Carolinas Medical Center.

As of Thursday, March 14, Barber was still listed on the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's website as being in custody in Mecklenburg County.
