The news of Pope Francis' election spread quickly through the Queen City and surrounding areas.
Pope Francis, also knows as Jorge Bergoglio, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina – making him the first non-European Pope since the papal conclaves started in 1267. He is also the first Jesuit, an order known for advocating social justice issues.
WBTV spoke with several people from Argentina, now living in Charlotte. Several say they are excited about Pope Francis coming from their country.
"Having a pope that is from South America is a big thing for everyone," said Aldo Nunez.
WBTV also met with members of the Catholic Diocese of Charlotte after the announcement. Charlotte Bishop Peter Jugis spoke about his excitement for the new papacy.
