HERKIMER COUNTY, NY (RNN) – On Thursday, police killed the man suspected of fatally shooting four people and injuring others at a car wash and barbershop .
The shootout between authorities and the suspect ended a standoff lasting several hours. Police stormed the abandoned building he was hiding in and opened fire after the man shot at a police dog, according to the Associated Press.
SWAT teams went in around 8 a.m., the AP reported. The police dog died, but no other officers were hurt.
Officials said Myers set his home on fire around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, then got into his car and drove to a local barber shop. After having words with those inside, he allegedly shot four people, two of whom died on the scene. The two other victims were taken to a local hospital, where they were listed in critical condition.
He left the barber shop, driving to a local oil change business, allegedly firing more rounds and killing two people there.
Myers then fled to an abandoned building, where officers say he fired rounds at them from inside. He remained there throughout Wednesday.
"We're concerned about officer safety so we're in no rush to bring to this a conclusion," said Joseph d'Amico with the New York State Police. "We want to make sure no one else gets hurt today."
NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo said there is no "rational motive" for the shootings.
The suspect is reportedly a white male, 5'11", slender with white hair and a white beard.
