Elevation Church eyeing Ballantyne location

With seven location and a 13,000 member congregation, Elevation Church is expanding.

Church officials submitted a rezoning application to the City of Charlotte for 21 acres of land at the corner of Lancaster Highway and Johnston Road in Ballantyne.

Elevation officials say they can't talk about the expansion but the rezoning application says Elevation wants to build a religious institution measuring 264,000 square feet.

It would include a 1600-seat worship center that would be 42,000 square feet, a children's ministry 22,000 square feet, and an office that's 200,000 square feet.

Some nearby residents say they would welcome Elevation but they worry about traffic.

Tracey Lutes wonders if the rezoning will include road widening. She says traffic can get heavy in the area.

Another resident hopes the Church will have someone directing traffic in and out of the facility on Sundays.

Michael Rozell says "Elevation Church has a big following - and will probably continue to grow. Definitely the area is going to feel it - the effect - in a good way. Positive. Not in a negative way."

Rozell, whose family owns the property and Refuge Ranch Ministries, says Elevation officials contacted them about the property and the family agreed to sell.

Rozell says his Ministry is growing and they were looking for new place when Elevation Church started inquiring about the property.

He says "I think it's great plans for what's proposed now - with Elevation coming in."
