A police search in Mecklenburg County forced an area middle school to be locked down Tuesday morning.
Police say that a passing driver observed a "tan" skin male, slender build, approximately 5'6 to 5'8" was walking along Idlewild Road near Kale Lane.
The caller said that the man was walking in the direction of Mint Hill Middle School near the wood line.
The caller also said the male was carrying a red backpack and a long gun (shotgun). He was approximately a quarter to a half mile from the school in a heavily wooded area.
The lockdown took effect at Mint Hill Middle School around 10:16 a.m. The school is in Matthews along the 11500 block of Idlewild Road.
Officers from the Mint Hill Police Department, Matthews Police Department and CMS Law Enforcement circulated the area for approximately 90 minutes.
The Air Unit from CMPD also responded and flew over the general area. No subject was located and officers cleared the area.
