Firefighters in Huntersville released more information about a Monday afternoon brush fire.
Emergency crews referred to the flames Monday as a "large area of fast moving brush fire".
Officials say Huntersville Station 2 noticed a strong small of grass burning and a haze of smoke in the air at about 3:45 p.m. Around that same time, a passerby reported ash falling from the sky.
By 3:57 p.m., crews had located a large fire burning along the power line right of way between Gilead Road and Bud Henderson Road.
Officials say the fire was moving quickly into the woods, climbing and topping trees in the area.
Crews attacked the flames and closed the roadway. Additional units were brought in to help contain the fire. They worked for an hour to contain the flames.
The Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause. No homes are located nearby, but the area is frequented by hikers and bikers.
