Harris Teeter to return to Gastonia

A change is coming soon to Gaston County.

The change would not only bring new jobs, but also a new look for Gastonia.

Harris Teeter is planning to build a new store soon, in a new shopping center.

The grocery chain will be back in the county for the first time since last year.

"I'm happy that it's coming back," said one shopper.

Developers have chosen 18-acres of land to be the new home of the store.

The site, which sits near the area of Robinwood and Kendrick Roads, will also include 15 other shops and businesses.

Developers say the new shopping center will bring 300-400 jobs to the area.

"That's going to be great here because here in Gastonia there's no jobs around here, they've closed all our mills and our textiles," said shopper Belinda Newton.

The popular grocery store will open just miles from where the old Harris Teeter closed last Summer. The store was purchased and replaced by Lowe's Foods. Newton says she was disappointed when it left town.

"Now when they have those double coupons we don't have a store to actually go and recover those coupons, I think the closest one is in Lincolnton, that's a long ride to go and get your savings," said Newton.

But not everyone is so excited about the new project.

The development means a tiny shopping center nearby will be torn down. Joyce Whitlock owns Sew and Sew monogramming in the shopping center.  She's already received word she'll have to move her shop.

"I'm not excited to move, Sew and Sew's been here probably about 11 years," said Whitlock.

But she admits, bringing Harris Teeter back to the area, would make a lot of people happy.

"It will just be a nice addition to what was already here, this neighborhood is already accustomed to Harris Teeter because it just left here," said Whitlock.

Construction on the project will begin this Fall. The store is expected to open next year.
