Murder in broad daylight

A young man is gunned down on a Sunday afternoon, on a sidewalk and in clear view of anyone walking or driving by.

Yet, no one in the community is talking.

CMPD Detective Michael Grande has very little information in his attempt to solve the murder of 24-year old Keith Houston.

"We don't know where he was going or what he was doing. He was just walking along."

Houston was found at 12:30 in the afternoon on Sunday, February 17th. He was laying on the sidewalk and died later at the hospital.

At the spot where he was gunned down in West Charlotte, there are flowers left by family and friends.

His brothers, cousins and twin sister, Keisha Houston, met with me there.

"I just can't sleep until they find out who did it," she said, "I'm not going to be able to be at peace until they find out."

The scene of the crime is an open field used as an easement for Duke Energy power lines. It's wide open and next to busy Tuckaseegee Road.

Detective Grande says, "We have a convenience store right down the road, there's a couple churches, there's a bus stop not too far from where this happened. Being a Sunday afternoon at 12:30 in the afternoon, there's a pretty good likelihood there was somebody out that saw something."

Both police and Houston's family are hoping that somebody has the guts to come forward.

"Tell what you know, it's not called snitching'" said his cousin, Deborah Thompson. "The sooner people can get that out of their heads the better off we will be. Please, because we need justice."

If you can help provide that justice, call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600. There is a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of Houston's murderer. Crime Stoppers is confidential.
