Driver arrested in Union County car chase

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Union County Sheriff's Deputies attempted to pull over the driver of 1994 Chevy pickup truck that was speeding during a routine traffic stop Thursday afternoon.

Deputies also observed that the truck had a fictitious license plate.

The driver did not stop and led deputies and the NC Highway Patrol on a vehicle chase in and around the Wedding and Wesley Chapel area.

The NC Highway Patrol used stop stick at various locations the driver passed which eventually flattened all the vehicles tires.

The driver, Marty Yates Benton of Mint Hill, was taken into custody without incident near the intersection of Potter's Road and Waxhaw Indian Trail Road.

Benton told officers he panicked and that's why he didn't stop .

He will face charges from the NC Highway Patrol and the Union County Sheriff's office, including injury to real property, flee/elude arrest, reckless driving, speeding, and fictitious/expired registration plate.
