RALEIGH, NC (WBTV) -

The North Carolina House of Representatives unanimously passed House Bill 149 Thursday.

House Bill 149 is commonly known as "Caylee's Law" after Caylee Anthony, the two-year-old whose disappearance and death resulted in the now-infamous trial of her mother, Casey Anthony.

"Caylee's Law is an important tool that could save the life of a missing child," Mecklenburg Rep. Jacqueline Schaffer  said.

"It also ensures that in a worst-case scenario, this kind of reprehensible behavior can be prosecuted adequately under the law."

The bill requires a parent or guardian to report a child as missing within 24 hours, and a third party who reasonably suspects that a child is missing to report it within a reasonable period of time.

The bill also raises the offense level of various failures to report and includes a punishment for failure to report child abuse if serious physical injury occurs.

The bill does not alter the current statutory requirements for teachers or child care facilities.

House Bill 149 now moves to the North Carolina Senate.
