(WMC-TV) - A man is recovering at The MED in satisfactory condition after both his legs were severed while fixing a flat in the Southwind area Wednesday night.
Michael Owens, 38, was fixing a tire going westbound on Winchester Road.
Owens called for help from a friend. When the friend arrived, he parked his vehicle behind Owens with his flashers on.
A short time later a Ford F -150 made full impact with the rear of the second vehicle which drove it into the Camry while Owens was standing at the trunk.
The impact severed his legs and pinned him under the vehicle. He was then airlifted to the Med in extremely critical condition.
The accident scene is a reminder for drivers to watch out on the road, and pull over to avoid a crash.
Mike Steele with Grimes Tires said the best thing you can do is get out of the car through the passenger side door, and call for help.
He said if you have to get out of the car and change the tire, make sure you take a look at your rear and side view mirrors before you get out. Once you've gotten out of the car, walk to the front and away from traffic, and make sure it is clear before you even take a look at the tire.
Either way, he said slow down and give plenty of space.
"Anything you can do to bring attention to you being on the side of the road," said Steele.
Investigators said speed was not a factor in the crash, but they are still investigating.
