AVERY COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -
Snow fell all day Wednesday in North Carolina's High Country.
High winds made it tough to measure just how much snow fell and where but drifts of two and three feet and higher in spots could be seen in many areas.
On top of Beech Mountain drivers faced whiteout conditions.
"It's as bad as I have ever seen it," said one driver.
Highway crews tried to keep roads cleared but blowing snow kept covering up many spots they had just worked.
While there has been some snowfall this winter, the season has been relatively mild compared to other years, but the past two weeks has seen the biggest snowfalls of the year.
"Seems like winter keeps moving towards March," said mailman Adrian Julian as he made the rounds on Beech Mountain.
Slippery conditions made it difficult for all drivers.
In Banner Elk, a line of cars moved slowly up the highway.
Authorities urged motorists to stay off the road if possible and plan for a slow trip if they did venture out.
The Ski Industry still hopes to stay open a few more weeks and the cold temperatures Wednesday along with the snow will help in that effort.
Overnight, conditions will not improve very much, said officials. The wind is dying down but temperatures will remain cold so roads will remain covered with snow and ice.
By Thursday midday, officials expect most major roads will be clear. Until then, they urge all drivers to use caution and just remain home, if possible.
