Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is bringing supporters of her plan to expand Medicaid to about 300,000 more Arizonans to the state Capitol.
The proposal the Republican governor announced in mid-January needs legislative approval and Tuesday's planned rally of health care professionals is an effort to sway lawmakers to back her plan.
Halfway into the legislative session there's still no clear picture of legislation allowing the expansion. Some Republicans remain vehemently opposed to any expansion under the federal Affordable Care Act.
The federal government would pay for most of the expansion. Brewer estimates about $1.6 billion a year in new federal funding when the plan is fully up. She's proposing to assess hospitals a new fee to bring in more than $150 million a year to pay the state's share.
