Convergys grows again; hiring 100 new employees

Posted: Updated:

Convergys is hiring 100 new full time employees in Hickory.

The company made the announcement Monday.

When Convergys announced their new Hickory location in 2008, they committed to creating 446 new jobs.

The company currently employs 650 people. The new hires will bring that to 750.

"We are very excited to be growing in the Hickory community and look forward to many more years of partnership," said Billie Coon, Site Director at Convergys in Hickory.

"Working at Convergys as a customer service representative may serve as a great stepping stone to a career in operations, recruitment, or training. In fact, more than 70 percent of Convergys' customer service managers began their careers as agents, and we are known for the internal promotion of our employees."

Community leaders, including Catawba County and Hickory City elected officials, Economic Development and Chamber representatives gathered at Convergys in Hickory for the announcement and heard firsthand how the company is impacting the community in numerous ways.

"As part of the Hickory business community since 2008, Convergys encourages its employees to support the communities in which they live and work. We support the United Way, volunteer at the Hickory Soup Kitchen, the Christmas Bureau, collect hats, gloves, and scarves for the homeless, and we participated and raised over $2,000 for Relay for Life," said Coon.

Austin Pearce, Executive Director of the Hickory Soup Kitchen, says the Convergys group in Hickory has provided hundreds of pounds of food and hundreds of coats, hats, and gloves for the clients of the Hickory Soup Kitchen.

"Their support year after year is what makes sure the homeless and hungry in our community don't go without. Last year the Soup Kitchen served more than 70,000 plates of food to more than 40,000 guests with the help of companies like Convergys!"

In addition, as part of the White House's Joining Forces initiative and Milicruit, Convergys is dedicated to helping employ America's veterans and military spouses by participating in the 10,000 Job Challenge.

"Convergys and our clients benefit from the exceptional work ethic and commitment to providing exemplary service so consistently demonstrated by military service members and their spouses," said Coon.

"We offer site-based and work-at-home employment opportunities, both of which can be a great fit for veterans, active military personnel who are making the transition from service to civilian life, and military spouses who need a portable career option that can transfer from base-to-base."

"We are delighted to hear about the growth that Convergys continues to make.  This growth, which is shared by Hickory and its residents, is clear evidence that the company made the right decision in choosing to locate here," said Mayor Rudy Wright.

"Their employees are learning valuable customer service and technological skills; skills that will never go out of date."

"With this expansion, Convergys will be impacting the lives of over 700 families in our community," said Catawba County Commissioner Randy Isenhower.

"I have been very impressed to find out how much they give back to the community through the United Way and direct charitable giving to organizations like the Hickory Soup Kitchen, Relay for Life and other worthwhile organizations."

"When we announced Convergys in 2008, they committed to create 446 new jobs," said Julie Pruett, Director of Business Recruitment with Catawba County Economic Development Corporation.

"I never imagined they would grow to 750 people and be one of the county's largest employers. We are fortunate that they keep choosing to create these jobs in Catawba County."

Hiring will begin immediately.

"We are looking for highly motivated individuals to handle inbound customer calls and customer service. Potential employees must have exemplary customer service skills, computer literacy, and candidates should posses some sales experience," Coon said.
