LINCOLN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -
Officers say a Lincoln County man broke into his neighbor's home, stole stuff, then passed out in a nearby field with his 20-month-old child next to him.
The temperature Friday morning was about 40 degrees when officers found 46-year-old Clarence Ray Barnette and his child.
Deputies were called at 9:30 a.m. Friday. They found the front door of a home on Maiden Highway kicked in, and the home ransacked. A stolen revolver was on the ground in the driveway.
Neighbors told deputies they saw Barnette leaving the area near the home and walking south on Maiden Highway
Investigators started looking for Barnette and found him in a field off Maiden Highway, near the intersection of Springs East Road.
Deputies say Barnette was passed out and his child was next to him.
The child was put into a patrol car to get warm until DSS took custody.
Deputies recovered jewelry, money, phones, prescription pills, and a stuffed toy taken from the neighbor's home.
Officers arrested Barnette and charged him with Felony Breaking and Entering, Larceny after Breaking and Entering, and Possession of Stolen Goods. He was also charged with misdemeanor Child Abuse and Failure to Appear.
Barnette was placed in the Harven A Crouse Detention Center under a $17,500 secured bond.
