Officers have warrants for a Gaston County man who fled a traffic stop early Friday morning and led deputies on a multi-county chase.
A deputy pulled over the driver on Old Plank Road near the Hines Circle Road intersection in eastern Lincoln County.
The driver was in a red Ford Ranger pickup truck with a large load of scrap metal.
39-year-old James Curtis Stewart of Poplar Street in McAdenville gave the deputy his license.
A check of the license located outstanding felony warrants for Stewart in Mecklenburg County.
When the deputy told Stewart about the warrants, he put the truck in drive and fled the scene.
Deputies chased the truck south on Highway 16 into Mecklenburg County. The chase continued onto I-485 and I-77.
Officers say, at one point, the truck drove through a grass median.
Surrounding counties were notified as the chase continued, but deputies called off the chase near the South Carolina line because they say Stewart was driving carelessly and recklessly, and traffic was becoming congested.
Stewart is still on the run. He is facing charges now in Lincoln County for Felony Fleeing to Elude Law Enforcement and traffic charges of Reckless Driving Willful Disregard for Safety of Others and Driving Left of Center Line.
The outstanding warrant in Mecklenburg County is for felony obtaining property by false pretenses.
