Arizona candidates could amass much larger campaign hauls under a proposed measure backed by Republicans in the House of Representatives.
The House advanced the legislation Thursday that would increase the amount of money individuals and political committees may give to a candidate.
The bill would allow statewide, legislative or other candidates to accept $2,500 from individual donors and $5,000 from some political committees. The bill would allow candidates to collect the maximum contribution twice -- during the primary and the general election.
A similar bill is advancing in the Senate.
Arizona currently caps individual contributions at $1,010 per statewide candidate and $488 per legislative candidate through the primary and general elections.
The Citizens Clean Election Act reduces campaign contribution limits to 80 percent of the mandated limits.
