ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -
Five people were arrested on drug charges in an investigation that began in early February with a traffic stop, according to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.
On Wednesday, February 27, deputies with the Rowan County Sheriff's Office executed state search warrants at homes on Fox Run Road, in Salisbury, and Percy Lane, in Rockwell.
The search was a follow up to a previous search at the same home on Fox Run Road on February 7. Ricky Ray Shackleford, 51, Nicole Doris Clark, 32, and Steven Daniel Kenneway, 26, all lived at the home on Fox Run Road and were arrested during the search.
Shackleford was charged with conspiracy to traffick Opium, Level III, maintaining a dwelling, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Clark was charged with conspiracy to traffick Opium, Level III and trafficking Opium by possession, Level III. Kenneway was charged with conspiracy to traffic Opium, Level III and trafficking Opium by possession, Level III.
Paul Sylvester Burgess, 73, was arrested at his home on Percy Lane. He was charged with conspiracy to traffick Opium, Level III.
Deputies said Samuel Lee Knotts, 37, was arrested later and also charged with conspiracy to traffick Opium, Level III, and trafficking Opium by possession and transportation, Level III.
The arrests stem from the seizure of approximately 1,000 Opioid prescription drugs and over $17,000 cash on February 7, during a vehicle stop involving Shackleford and Knotts, and the search of Shackleford's home.
Ledgers found inside the home described the sales of large amounts of Opioids that were being obtained through legal prescriptions. Unfilled prescriptions were also found belonging to Burgess and Clark, deputies said.
