Donations needed for rescued dogs

In early February, police rescued 27 dogs from a suspected dog fighting ring in Charlotte. Officers called it Charlotte biggest dog fighting ring ever.

WBTV checked with Animal Care & Control this week to see how the dogs are doing.

A spokesperson says the dogs are being cared for at the shelter, but are not yet available for adoption pending the legal outcome of the case.

If you would like to help the dogs, there are several items you can donate to Animal Care & Control for Kennel Enrichment. Links are attached if you would like to buy the items online.

  • Kongs (large or extra large, black, extreme version). Buy online here.
  • Nylabones (Dura Chew version). Buy online here.
  • Premiere Busy Buddy Kibble Nibble Dog Toy. Buy Online here.

Working off a tip, officers found the dogs at a home in the 7800 block of Carelock Circle in east Charlotte.

Police said they found several of the dogs tied up with chains. Many had scars and officers say they showed signs of dogfighting.

Suspects Melvin Smith and Lefonze Williams are fighting the charges. Williams says he breeds dogs, but doesn't fight them.

Both men are due back in court March 1.
