Wrong way driver wrecks on US 321, two taken to the hospital

Two people were taken to the hospital after an elderly woman got on US 321 in Granite Falls, NC and was going the wrong way.

The accident happened at about 8:30pm on US 321 near Pinewood Road.

The elderly woman was seriously injured in the crash and airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center- Main in Charlotte.

The driver of the car she hit was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Granite Falls police are working to determine how long the elderly woman was driving the wrong way on 321. No names have been released.

    The North Carolina Department of Transportation says the wreck happened around 7 a.m. on Highway 321 (Blowing Rock) near Kirby Mountain Road, shutting the highway down in both directions.

    Detectives say the wreck happened around 2 a.m. when the vehicle hit the base of the 7th Street bridge where it crosses over Interstate 277.
