A local high school student was killed in a car accident in Union County Tuesday, according to the Monroe Police Department.
The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. on U.S. 601 North near Deese Road.
Officers said a Honda Accord driven by Mackenzie Rae Whiteley, 17, of Marshville, crossed the center line and hit a Ford F-250 head-on. Whiteley and the driver of the truck were taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Whiteley died in the hospital at 1:30 a.m. The driver of the truck was released from the hospital and is expected to be okay.
Officials said Whiteley was a senior at Piedmont High School and had enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where she was scheduled to begin basic training in August.
"This is so sad and our hearts go out to her family and friends," said Chief Debra Duncan of the Monroe Police Department.
Police told WBTV the investigation into the collision is continuing.
