Rise and Shine Fitness Challenge: Training for a Race

As we transition into the summer, many people are getting outdoors and picking up running again.

Marie Duty, a group exercise instructor at the YMCA tell us not only is running a great for of cardiovascular exercise, it's also known to lower risk of disease and to help with weight loss. Running also helps reduce stress and releases endorphins, which improves the mood.

To get started with running, Duty recommends starting a run/walk method, running in groups, and signing up for a race.

The YMCA of Greater Charlotte has a lot of races that happen throughout the year at various YMCA branches and they hit all levels:

1. Center City has a 10k and half marathon race that starts in March

2. Morrison has a 5k/10 Race in May

3. Steele Creek Y actually has an adventure race which is 5k Mud Run in June
