MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

East Valley investigators are piecing together the details of what led up to a deadly accident in Mesa Tuesday afternoon.

One person was killed in the accident that involved a car and a semitrailer.

The car was ripped apart, with pieces strewn all over the road. It happened on Lindsay and McDowell Road just after 1:30 p.m.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. There is no word yet on who died in the crash.

The semi was traveling westbound on McDowell Road when the car exited the Loop 202, police said. The car slid under the trailer portion of the truck, according to officers.

It's not clear whether the car was speeding or if it ran a light. The driver of the truck was not injured.

After the crash, the truck driver stopped immediately and cooperated with police.
