Man arrested, charged in jewelry store robberies

Police in Monroe have arrested a man they say is responsible for two recent robberies at local jewelry stores.

On February 13, a man walked into Top Dollar Jewelry and Loan on Roosevelt Boulevard and asked to see some jewelry. The man then grabbed several gold necklaces from the display counter and ran out of the store, police said.

On Monday, February 18, Monroe Police Department detectives, with the assistance of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, conducted a search warrant at an apartment on J. Julian Lane in Charlotte.

As a result of the search, Durell Stephon Williams, 23, of Charlotte, was arrested and charged with two counts of felonious larceny. One charge is for the robbery on February 13, and another for a robbery that occurred at the Treasure Chest on Skyway Drive on February 1.

Williams was taken to the Union County Jail and placed under a $20,500 bond.
