PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An early-morning fire at a Phoenix apartment complex displaced 10 families Tuesday.

The fire broke out about 12:30 a.m. in a vacant second-floor unit, according to a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman.

The vacant unit near 43rd Avenue and Thomas Road was a total loss, and the flames badly damaged a unit next door where one of the families lived, the spokesman said.

Two lower units suffered extensive water damage. Seven adults and three children lived in those three units, said Brian Gomez of the Grand Canyon Chapter of the American Red Cross, which was helping the families find another place to stay.

Seven other families were forced out when the water in their units was shut off and needed assistance, he said.

No one was hurt, and the cause was still under investigation, according to the fire department spokesman.

No other information was immediately available.
