The announced merger between US Airways and American Airlines means changes will be coming to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, but officials there say nothing major is expected to happen immediately.
The website for the self-proclaimed friendliest airport in America said Thursday that the combination of the two airlines could mean more flights, but that it could be more than a year before the merger is finalized.
Until further notice, the website instructs travelers to depart as usual from the US Airways and American gates at Sky Harbor. Some 300 US Airways flights a day use 50 gates at the airport's largest terminal, Terminal 4.
American has a tiny presence by comparison, with just 20 departures a day using three gates in the smaller Terminal 3.
Airport spokeswoman Deborah Ostreicher says those operations will most likely move to the US Airways area of Terminal 4 when the merger is complete.
