North Carolina's Supreme Court is considering whether campus police at private colleges who are authorized to use the power of arrest must be as transparent as public agencies.
The high court heard arguments Wednesday in a case involving Elon University that could help define the role of officers who are not entirely public officials yet have arrest authority greater than private employees.
Elon's lawyers want the court to rule that campus police should not be subject to a North Carolina law requiring transparency of police arrest records. A former Elon student contends state law requires campus police to produce arrest information showing whether a fellow student fled an officer before being arrested.
