Popular Ballantyne restaurant set fire by unknown person, spokeswoman says

A popular restaurant in Ballantyne was damaged by fire early Tuesday morning.

When Charlotte firefighters arrived at Bad Daddy's burger bar on John J. Delaney Drive just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, they reported seeing flames coming from the restaurant's outside patio.

The flames were quickly extinguished, but scars of the fire remained.  Burnt plastic from the outside covering, as well as charred wood where the fire reached the overhead beams.

A spokeswoman for the restaurant said the fire started on the outdoor awning. Video shows that someone started the fire on the awning.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the place was closed for the night, so it's unclear at this point what may have started the fire.

Investigators arrived just after the flames were put down to make that determination.

The CMPD said the fire appears to have caused minor damage, although firefighters were seen checking neighboring businesses as well as scaling a ladder truck to see the fire had reached the roof.
