Police: Four-year-old child shot herself after finding gun in bedroom

A four-year-old child shot herself in the leg Monday evening after police say she found a gun in her mother's bedroom.

CMPD say the shooting happened at First Ward Place on North Davidson Street between 5 and 5:30 p.m.

CMPD detectives were called to Presbyterian Hospital around 5:30 p.m., after hospital officials say the child arrived with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

Police say the child found the gun in her mother's and mother's boyfriend bedroom. The child pulled the trigger and shot herself in the leg.

Officials said the child is out of the hospital and expected to be OK.

Marsharier Littlejohn, 36, and Leandre Budden, 30, are charged with failure to store firearm to protect minor. Littlejohn was also charged with child neglect resulting in serious physical injury.

Littlejohn was arrested Tuesday morning and is being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail under a $1,500 bond. 

Budden was arrested on Thursday February 14, after he fled the state, according to Mecklenburg County Sheriff arrest records. His bond is set at $2,500.
