LINCOLNTON, NC (WBTV) -
A CMC-Lincoln nurse has been fired and is being investigated for allegedly stealing prescription drugs from the hospital, according to Lincoln County Sheriff David Carpenter.

Carpenter tells WBTV the Lincolnton hospital contacted his office on Feb. 4 to report wrongdoing by an employee.

The Sheriff will not release the name of the nurse, but says she has since been fired. She worked on the second floor of the hospital and is accused of stealing dilaudid, a powerful prescription painkiller.

Carpenter says the nurse is a Gaston County resident. He was not sure how long she had been an employee of the hospital but says the investigation will go back at least six months.

The woman has not yet been charged. Carpenter says she will be charged at the conclusion of the investigation, which could take several more weeks.

A drug diversion specialist with the State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Lincoln County's drug investigator.

A spokesman for Carolinas HealthCare System says he is checking into the allegations.

The hospital released the following statement: "CMC-Lincoln has been cooperating fully with local law enforcement in an investigation into an alleged theft of prescription drugs by a former employee at the hospital.  The investigation is ongoing and CMC-Lincoln will continue to assist law enforcement until all facts are gathered and a decision on next steps is reached."
