A 1-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was pulled from a pool in El Mirage Thursday afternoon, fire authorities said.
Fire personnel performed life-saving efforts and the child was flown to Phoenix Children's Hospital.
The child was at home with his grandmother, who was watching him and another child.
The grandmother had been in the backyard with the boy but went inside to check food that was on the stove, leaving him unattended, according to El Mirage police Detective Kim Walden.
When she returned, she found the boy floating in the swimming pool, Walden said. The grandmother pulled the boy from the pool and called a family member, who in turn called 911.
