A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher is accused of assaulting a student at school.
Gail Attaway teaches kindergarten through third grade at University Meadows Elementary School in the University area.
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and a police report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department show Attaway is charged with assault on a child under 12.
According to the police report, a person outside the child's family contacted police. The reporting person said Attaway grabbed a six-year-old boy's head just after 9 a.m. on January 17, while at the school.
The police report indicates the child had bruises and scratches, but did not need medical treatment.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed Attaway's employment Thursday morning, and said she is suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
Attaway has a scheduled court appearance in late March.
