Gaston Co. man arrested on 9th DWI charge, police say

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) -

A Gaston County man is facing his ninth time before a judge after being arrested for driving while impaired.

Michael Wayne Upton, 45, was pulled over on Monday night for running a redlight in Cramerton.

The incident was reported at 12:15 a.m. on Wilkinson Boulevard, according to the Cramerton Police Department.

Upton was very unsteady on his moped and refused a breathalyzer test, police said.

Police say this is Upton's ninth time being arrested for DWI in at least the last 25 years. He' been convicted in multiple counties seven times.

The eighth charge was on a boat and Upton plead guilty to a lesser charge.

Upton is also listed as a registered sex offender for taking indecent liberties with a child in 2005, records show.

Upton is in the Gaston County Jail under a $250,000 bond.
