"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
In a recent interview, best-selling author and leadership coach, Dr. Henry Cloud, reminded viewers of a quote:
"Immature people ask for life to meet their demands…while mature people meet the demands of life."
He was responding to questions raised by studies of today's younger generation.
These studies have led independent researchers to a common conclusion.
We, yes - you and I, are raising a generation of narcissists.
Strong language and a tough pill to swallow.
But consider this:
Facebook provides hundreds, even thousands, of "friends" who can be amplified or silenced with the click of a mouse.
Accentuate the positive, eliminate any criticism.
Reality television portrays young people as "idols" based on singular talents, or simply their willingness to display absurd or destructive behavior (in their quest for 15 minutes of fame).
It's true, we all want our children to develop healthy self-images.
But we should also instill in them the ability to honestly appraise their own effort.
Sometimes you just don't finish in first place.
Those can be times of disappointment – but also times of great motivation and growth.
It all comes down to how you handle the obstacle.
Another quote for you from Thomas Edison: "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
