Accident causes back-up on I-77

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Emergency crews are on the scene of an accident that shut down three lanes of I-77 in south Charlotte and injured two people.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. Monday in the southbound lanes of the interstate near Arrowood Road.

All three southbound lanes were blocked, and traffic was diverted around the scene using the exit lane for Arrowood Road.

At 2:45 p.m., there were two ambulances and several fire trucks on the scene, as well as officers assessing the scene and directing traffic.

As of 3 p.m., one of the three lanes was reopened. Officials told WBTV that impact to traffic in the area is expected to be high until around 4:30 p.m.

Two people were taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville, and are expected to be okay, according to Medic.

There is no word on what may have caused the accident.
