Police: Officer trapped under dead tree trunk during chase

A police officer in Charlotte is hospitalized after he became trapped under a tree during a chase on Monday.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, an officer was involved in a foot chase along the 2400 block of Finchley Drive, in east Charlotte, around 12:19 p.m.

Officers say the suspect was wanted for outstanding warrants.

The officer followed the suspect behind a house and as he was climbing over the fence, a dead tree trunk that was lying on the fence fell off pinning the officer underneath.

The officer radioed for assistance and responding officers pulled the dead tree trunk off of the officer.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the officer to Presbyterian Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The extent of the officer's injuries are not known at this time.

Additional charges are pending against the suspect who has been identified.
