Man found dead in burning Burke Co. home

BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

"It was a tough fire to fight," said Oak Hill Fire Chief Jimmy Winters. "It was especially tough because of what we came across."

Winter was talking about 78 year old Floyd Alexander "Bill" Moore. His body was found just inside the front door of the home.

"It's just a tragedy," said Winters.

The Fire was spotted by a passerby on Highway 126 just after 6:30 Monday morning.

Firefighters arrived quickly and so did Mary Collette the niece of Moore. When she spotted the firefighters at the scene and smoke coming out of the home, she alerted the rescue teams that her Uncle might be inside.

The firefighters broke down a door, found Moore in the front room and pulled him outside. "It was just too late," said Collette, "He was gone."

Investigators spent much of the day sifting through the inside of the house. They ruled out anything suspicious and have ruled it an accident. Investigators are still looking into the exact cause.  There were no smoke detectors found in the home.

Family members gathered outside then home as investigators did their work inside. "He was a good man," said his niece Sarah Sharpe. "If anyone needed anything he would do what he could to help them," she said.

Moore's body has been sent off for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death but firefighters at the scene said it appeared, from where they found Moore, that he had attempted to get out of the house.

The family says it is all a shock but that Moore lived a good life. "Hey, this shows you never know what's gonna happen," said Collette.

  • She said: It's time for Panthers to invest in secondary, starting in 2018 NFL draft

    Saturday, April 21 2018 1:24 PM EDT2018-04-21 17:24:58 GMT

Here's a revolutionary thought: The Carolina Panthers should invest in their secondary. And not with mid- to late-round picks or development projects, either. On April 26, the first night of the 2018 NFL Draft, Carolina should take a defensive back at No. 24. A day-one starter. A leader.
