CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for Ashe, Avery, Watauga, Mitchell and Yancey counties until 7:00 p.m. Sunday.
After several inches of snow fell in the high country overnight, another 2-4 inches will fall across most of the area again today. Strong, gusty winds and the threat of black ice will accompany this system, leading to dangerous travel conditions on mountain roadways.
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) website, even main roads were partially covered with snow and ice Sunday morning, and conditions will continue to deteriorate as snow continues to fall throughout the day.
Those traveling through the mountains today should slow down and be vigilant.
The snow should end overnight, with clear skies to follow on Monday.
