LENOIR, NC (WBTV) -

A Lenoir man has been charged with murder in a fatal accident that occurred in early 2012, according to the Lenoir Police Department.

Joseph Scott Roland, 29, was charged on January 30 with one felony count each of murder and aggravated felony death by vehicle, along with one misdemeanor count of driving while impaired for an accident that claimed the life of Ralph Michael Prestwood.

The accident happened the evening of May 25, 2012, on Norwood Street, near Mullberry Street in Lenoir. Police say Roland was driving a Ford Explorer when he crossed the center line and struck a van, driven by Prestwood, head on.

Prestwood and a passenger in his vehicle were taken to Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Prestwood later died from his injuries after being airlifted from CMH to Carolinas Medical Center.

Roland left the scene of the crash before officers arrived, but was later located and taken to CMH for minor injuries, police said.

On Wednesday, Roland appeared in Magistrate Court where he was released on a custody release, pending a court date of March 4.
