Storm Damage: Flooding, Power Outages

It's time to turn on your television...WBTV News This Morning will be on from 4:30 to 7:00 AM and we've got a lot of news to tell you about on this Thursday, 31 January 2013.  John Carter reporting to you this morning.

STORM DAMAGE AND FLOODING:  As I write this message...there are more than 11-thousand power outages across the Duke Energy system...many of them caused by the severe storms that swept through the area.  There are currently 17-hundred outages in Mecklenburg County...more than 16-hundred in Rowan County...800 in Lancaster County.

We have flood warnings in effect for several counties.  We'll show you flooding that's occurred in many areas...including a look at a six acre park on the ASU campus that's completely underwater.

Cam Man Ron Lee will join us live for more on the storm damage.  He's been checking in on numerous places around the area...reporting on downed power lines and downed tree branches.  Right now, there are no reports of any injuries.

That wasn't the case in other states...as tornados were reported in Georgia and Tennessee.  Two deaths are being blamed on the storms.

We had a high temperature of 74 degrees Wednesday...but that won't be the case today.  It's going to be quite a bit cooler...freezing in some areas.  Al Conklin will have complete details in your First Alert Weather forecast.

Astrid Martinez has a very interesting story that's all new for the morning show...could your carpet be making you sick?  It could be playing a role in some folks coming down with colds and the flu!

The U.S. Senate is poised today to allow the government to borrow hundreds of billions of dollars more to meet its obligations.

Republican Chuck Hagel is to be the lone witness today as the Senate Armed Services Committee holds a hearing on his nomination for defense secretary.

Fifth-ranked Duke took on Wake Forest last night...and it was anybody's game right down to the end.  We'll have highlights!  And the Charlotte Bobcats were on the road last night...taking on the San Antonio Spurs.

All that and so much more...be sure to tune in...from 4:30 to 7:00 AM.  We'll see you then!
