SAWMILLS, NC (WBTV) -
Fire investigators say a cooking fire caused extensive damage to a wood frame house in Sawmills Wednesday night.
The Caldwell County Fire Marshal was called to the home at the intersection of Pinewood Road and Dudley Shoals Road in Granite Falls at about 6:00 p.m.
Fire Marshal Robbie Wilkie says the fire started as a cooking fire in the single-story wood frame house.
The Fire Chief, Brian Church, said the homeowner was there with her son, as well as a friend and the friend's daughter.
"The house was fully involved in flames when we arrived on the scene," says Chief Church. "A pot of grease had been left on the stove, which caught fire and escalated quickly. All of the occupants got out of the house safely along with three of their dogs. Firefighters rescued a fourth dog as they entered the house and took it outside to EMS crews who gave him oxygen and he appeared to be ok."
The Fire Marshal said the entire house suffered damage from the fire, heat, and smoke. Damage is estimated at about $40,000.
