PSI Monday: Gambling for jobs

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The pressure to bring jobs to North Carolina is intense. Local and state governments have handed out economic incentives in the billions of dollars. It's all an effort to bring down the nation's 5th highest unemployment rate.

"North Carolina has figured out how to do it right," proclaimed former Governor Bev Perdue when Chiquita announced it was coming to Charlotte.

Burke County Economic Development Director isn't so sure.

"I don't think anybody likes them," said Darnell. "They are a necessary evil."

Former North Carolina State Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr says it's all about politics.

"I mean every politician is frantic about being perceived as helping to bring, or create jobs," said Orr.

It's an economic arms race that comes with a huge price tag.

"I think the arms race not only escalated, but it's gotten out of control," said Darnell.

The Problem Solvers travel the state to find out what's really being done to reel in new jobs. See the report Monday on WBTV News at 11:00.
