Hazmat crews were called in to battle a fire at a vacant building in south Phoenix early Tuesday morning that had signs warning that it had recently been fumigated with cyanide.
The mostly brick building in the area of Baseline Road and Central Avenue was once a church and also a lodge, and most of the damage was inside, according to Larry Nunez of the Phoenix Fire Department.
The building had a number of pockets where the fire burned, but firefighters had all but a few hot spots extinguished by 4:30 a.m., Nunez said. The fire was reported just before 3 a.m.
Nunez said the fire could have been started by someone who was trying to keep warm, and fire investigators were called in.
Hazmat crews and firefighters had to use extreme caution because of the possible presence of cyanide, often used to fumigate buildings with rat problems, Nunez said.
Baseline Road was closed in both directions between Central and First avenues.
There were no injuries.
No other information was immediately available.
