McCray takes over as head football coach at Gardner-Webb

Gardner-Webb has a new head coach for football and it is a name familiar with the football program.

Carroll McCray takes over the head coaching duties coming from North Greenville University.  McCray graduated from GW back in 1983 and was a 3 year letterman on offensive line back in his college days.

McCray spent only one season at North Greenville as the head coach as the Crusaders went 5-6, but finished strong winning 4 straight to finish the 2012 season.

Before that, McCray had coaching stops at Mercer (associate head coach), Austin Peay (head coach), Furman, Mississippi State, Samford, South Carolina, and Appalachian State (all as an assistant coach).

McCray is the 9th coach in the programs history and the first alum to take head coaching position since Woody Fish in 1984.

He takes over a program that has gone 11-22 in the last 3 seasons with their last Big South Conference title coming back in 2003.
