New sidewalk safety campaign unveiled in Charlotte


The city of Charlotte has unveiled a new measures to ensure the safety of people who use sidewalks.

The new campaign is in response to a string of traffic crashes involving pedestrians, including two fatalities last year.

WBTV is told the city will start a campaign targeting garbage and recycling carts, yard waste and other bulky items obstructing the sidewalks.
"This new initiative is aimed at making sidewalks safer for pedestrians, cyclists, runners and the disabled," the city told WBTV on Monday.

Morning joggers, people walking to school and people in the disabled community have all voiced concerns to the city about sidewalk safety. Many have to step onto the streets and maneuver past the trash cans that are placed out for pick up.

Last year, a tragic accident killed a Myers Park High School student who was riding a bike. He tried to avoid a garbage bin, fell in the street and then was hit by a car and died.

"What we are doing is really reminding residents how to properly prepare their collection items and that includes not placing them on the sidewalks," said Charita Curtis of City Solid Waste Services. "If you don't have the planning strip you can also place your roll out cart in your yard and our trucks are still able to service you."

"To help keep sidewalks safe, it is important that residents refrain from placing solid waste collection items – garbage/recycling carts, yard waste and bulky items – on sidewalks," the release about the new campaign stated.

"Solid Waste Services allows up to six feet of space within the curb for collection items to be placed for collection. Obstructions such as parked vehicles, which impede sidewalk traffic, should also not be placed on sidewalks."


The awareness campaign which includes radio and print ads will cost $25,000.
