Man pleads guilty, sentenced in July murder case

A man pleaded guilty in Mecklenburg County Superior Court Wednesday to a manslaughter charge from July, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Edward Timothy McClain, 43, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the death of Yolanda Copper, 39.

In July 2012, McClain was a long-haul trucker who stopped in Charlotte, and Copper came to his motel room.

Believing that she'd taken his money, McClain confronted her, and Copper then assaulted him, officials said.

McClain used excessive force to defend himself, and choked Copper. He then called the front desk and told an employee to call police. Yolanda Copper later died as a result of her injuries.

McClain was sentenced to 85 to 114 months in prison.
